On the eve of Samhain I celebrated the sabbat and honoured my ancestors in ritual. I am enjoying working as a solitary more and more each time. There is something about creating your own circle and connecting with the divine alone that is immensely empowering. I have moved away from large elaborate altar decorations for each sabbat and instead chose to add a few autumnal leaves, some acorns and my ceramic gourds along with the candle I created to honour my Nanna. I added a few new photos to my ancestor altar of mine and my husbands relations.
After creating my scared space and making an offering to the God and Goddess I created a small remembrance wreath with Ivy Rosemary and Poppy pods gathered from my garden. I bound this with red thread and ribbon. This wreath was then blessed and hung on my ancestor altar in honour and love.
I had found this beautiful poem on line and read this out after lighting the candle I had created for my Nanna (maternal grandmother)
I thought of you with love today,
but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday
and days before that too.
I think of you in silence,
I often speak your name.
All I have of you are memories
and your picture in a frame
Your memory is my keepsake
with which I’ll never part,
The goddess has you in her keeping
I have you in my heart.

I then sat with Nanna’s candle in front of me and created a memory jar of items that were hers or remind me of her and some photographs. I included a miniature ball of wool and some knitting needles that I had made, one of her rings, a needle threader, some pins and a thimble from her sewing box, a tiny bottle of red nail polish and a wrapper from her favourite chocolate bar. Each of these things holds significant memories for me of my Nanna.
I then spent time in quiet reflection before drawing some oracle cards for myself. Before laying out a plate of bread, cheese and sweets for my garden altar, and closing my circle.

The following evening I attended a Halloween party with some friends.
I hope you had a blessed Sabbat

The poem is really beautiful, but the jar you made for your Nana made me tear up. I can really feel the love you put into it.

Thank you, I’m really pleased with how the memory jar turned out. My Nanna was a very important person in my life being able to honour her in this way was very special for me.
